We first saw feminist theater in the 1970's springing up along with its respective political movement. White-middle women class began talking through consciousness-raising groups that rose out of disaffection for the misogyny that still existed behind the male left. Then came radical feminism that grew with the ideals that gender oppression was a systemic problem, and along with that we got the first early celebrated feminist theater, transferring the ideas of the movement into performance with experimental tactics and theaters. These theaters proved good but ineffective in the long-run, and many women including Megan Terry and Roberta Skylar left to form women-specific theater troupes. These new theaters brought about a revised gender axis and rescripting of famous plays from a female perspective. This movement proved dominant over other minority movements at the time. The dominance of this theater then lead to many women gaining notoriety in the system and award recognition for these women. The feminist theater began spitting as a section of it became more mainstream and other sections branched off still searching for a feminist voice and aesthetic. This along with economic burdens caused the movement to eventually fail. Other minority and lesbian feminists theaters lasted longer as they began exploring other ideas such as sexuality. Even though feminists theater dissipated, the decades that it was around began the feminist criticism and theories that are still seen in academia today.
